#you will always be a creator

as a 27 y/o self taught artist who's getting back into looking for opportunities to get my art out there AND get paid for it, here's things I wish I realized earlier:

IT'S OKAY TO BE SCARED! The real thing you have to realize is, scared or not, you should still follow through with that creative idea and start posting (regardless of skill level). Seeing that gradual change in styles and techniques is always welcome. Which also brings me to-

APPLY TO THOSE THINGS ANYWAY! Yeah, you thought I forgot about the "scared to apply because I feel like my art isn't good enough" mfs? Yeah, well, me too, bestie. If it's something that you can feasibly do, please apply to that job, that internship, that class, that school, that study abroad option, that open art call, that vendor opportunity, that friend who is actually serious about buying you stuff, etc. I promise you'll always feel a lil better off from it, even if some things may be different than you expected. You'll at the very least be able to look back and go, "oh shit, i did that" or "oh shit, that sucked. At least i learned"

Make a contract for commissions! Saves many headaches that have to do with payment and distribution because fuck working through 7+ versions of a piece/graphic/video/etc and not getting paid past the 3rd draft. Never again, lesson learned. There's many resources online for this, and you can always look at other people contracts and tweak them to your liking to match your business and, yes, if you sell your wares and labor, you're a business. You don't need a store front or webpage and though they'd be nice, you're still enough. Work towards that on your own timeline, no one else's.

The actual process while creating (for me, drawing and seeing the vision start to come through) is SO MUCH EASIER AND NICER than actually starting! If you struggle like me with feeling that you're a bit of an imposter because of XYZ (e.g. you haven't drawn alot recently, certain anatomy feels off, when's the last time you even posted???, only (insert number here) liked my post, etc) I'm here to let you know firsthand that 1. you're growing slowly but surely and, even if you don't implement things just yet, you SEE that something is off, 2. posting and numbers (while wonderful if a business) don't dictate your creativity, and 3. if you don't do it now, when?

(that last thing isn't rhetorical or a guilt trip, I mean literally like-

Make a schedule or list of things you're gonna do ASAP so you (or someone else) can hold yourself accountable in the short term)

((That last part also holds over to businesses, as well, so if you begin getting in the mindset that you're gonna doodle/draw/make music/animate/voice act/embroider/etc certain days (WHILE STILL GIVING GRACE TO YOUR BODY AND MENTAL STATE), you'll develop a long-term practice that would be a bit more in line with your schedule))

Since I'm also figuring all this stuff out myself, this is open to all other creatives to drop their advice, knowledge, realizations and resources as well! Our community is a strong one, but we always prove to be stronger together as a giant collective of creatives rather than different groups/subgroups imo

hey, remember being 18 years old and playing mass effect for the first time and it's got this like intense aura of being very small and very insignificant in a very big, very empty galaxy? remember playing mass effect for the first time and everything all of this is so new and mysterious, and it's 2am and you're sitting in a dark room in the light from your tv and you're playing through feros for the first time and you feel that this is someting very old and very ancient and you are somewhere you shouldn't be and you don't know what's going to happen or where you're going but you keep on. there's a tingling in your stomach and you're playing mass effect for the first time. the thorian is a milennia old sentient plant being. the rachni queen is old and telepathic and a hive mind and in pain. sovereign is an ancient machine that has not been built but is, and has always been, and this is something so alien and so unlike and beyond anything your human mind can comprehend, and this is something unexplainable and huge and as uncaring and indifferent as the empty galaxy around you. you're playing mass effect for the first time and you're walking on the surface of an almost completely empty planet with nothing but your two companions silently walking beside you and everything is so huge and empty and silent and you're so small and insignificant and it's so beautiful and so scary and you feel like you are on a rollercoaster about to drop down. you are playing mass effect for the first time and you're playing the mission on the moon and you stop and just look up at earth visible in the sky. you know this. this is home. you are playing mass effect for the first time, and the galaxy is so big, and you are so tiny, and everything is about to change for you.

webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.

it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

Hi, It was my birthday 6 days ago.

It's really late ik, i was busy with Uni and tests 😭 I wanted to make a post to appreciate all the tumblr and game creators that made this year worth it for me! This year was a bit of a dumpster fire for me, I've been struggling with shitty thoughts and depleting motivation but I've gotten through it with the help of video games and stories. These include the visual novels and original characters that I've come to appreciate and love. I've always loved stories and attached myself to fictional characters (haha not very healthy but yea) and seeing so many different and interesting original characters on tumblr is very inspiring to me. It's motivated me to draw more often and to think of my own stories. To all the creators I've mentioned, Thank you. Thank you for saving my creativity and giving me something to be happy about. I'll continue to support your creations :)

I often see people asking "is the idea I have unique and interesting?" and I think the most important thing is — is it unique to you, is it interesting to you? does it make you happy? does it bring you comfort? is it inspired by things you love and cherish? if so, that's the only thing that really matters because it doesn’t have to be good for the whole world, it has to be good for you. so create, tell stories, inspire, be grateful for other creators and respect their work and if what you do has a part of who you are in it then it will always be unique.

and just look at you! you created something with your own mind, the ideas came out of you and you put it on paper with whatever skill and experience you have at the moment and it will only become better with time and practice! you made it! cherish it!

The outfit in this was based off of an Animal Crossing outfit Clown had posted for Wally a little while ago! I messed around with it a Little bit, haha!
